We don’t talk enough about money or the power it holds to either create a life of ease or destroy our health. Most of what we believe about money we have picked up inadvertently from our families of origin, churches, neighborhoods, and society. We aren’t intentionally prepared for adulthood, but then we turn 18 and are bombarded with life changing financial decisions – credit cards, student loans, auto loans, career paths. Our heads are still spinning by the time we realize we’re in over our heads. Maybe we create a plan to get out of debt, but it fails. Maybe we have plenty of money, but we’re scared of losing it. Maybe what we have doesn’t matter because we’re working ourselves to the bone regardless. How do we change our behavioral patterns and get healing from our money traumas and fears? We start with emotional honesty.

  • Yes. Financial health is a core component of holistic health. All parts of us (physical, emotional, social, mental) are interconnected and have major impact on each other. We all need to focus on our financial health in the same way we focus on our physical, emotional, mental, and social health. Running a marathon one time doesn’t make you physically fit for life. Changing your diet to lower your cholesterol doesn’t mean you don’t ever have to think about your cholesterol again. Financial health is a life-long journey, and there is always more to learn about ourselves.

  • I remember being a kid and getting stuck under the waves at the beach. Right when I was catching my breath, another wave would hit and pull me back under. That’s what fear feels like for me. When we are struggling, hurting, ashamed, or afraid, we can get lost in those feelings. It’s hard to think about anything else when you are caught under the waves and fighting for your next breath.

Writing is a powerful tool to get out from under the crashing waves. In order to move through financial healing, we have to know WHY we feel the way we do (root work), HOW those roots have grown to form our adult lives (current behavioral patterns and belief systems), and WHAT it would feel like to reach future goals and live in financial health. Our words have power, and through writing, we can heal our past, present, and future selves.

  • Many of us have experienced financial trauma or have money-related memories that we would rather forget. When we have experienced a trauma of any sort, our bodies never forget and will diligently warn us of any potential danger. If you have experienced financial trauma, there’s a good chance that even the thought of money causes you to have a physical reaction such as increased heart rate, upset stomach, or hand tremors. This is your body going into fight or flight – Money is dangerous! Get out of there!

In order to heal our relationships with money, we have to tell our bodies that we are safe. There will be opportunities throughout the program to try various mind-body connection tools to begin to rewire your brain and heal your trauma responses.

  • Shame and fear thrive in darkness, and the best way to change your self-talk is to bring it to the light by saying it out loud. We need money community the same way we need parenting community, work community, couples’ community, divorce community, addiction community, and spiritual community. Your experiences are unique to you, but there is relief and freedom in knowing that you are not alone in your fears, shame, excitement, regret, hope, and success. This journey is better with support.

My guided program, Life Math: Unearthing Your Roots, Uncovering Your Beliefs, and Writing Your Future will offer you a path to financial healing, but the work is yours to do. This program will help you to write your money story through root work, identification of multi-generational patterns and belief systems, forgiveness and boundary setting, and an honest dive into what financial health will look and feel like for YOU.

Because financial health requires life math, financial literacy, and emotional honesty, I will also teach you the skills and concepts necessary to live a confident financial life. If the idea of math or numbers makes you shudder, this is the program for you.

By the end of the six weeks, you can expect to have:

✦ A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF YOUR MONEY SOCIALIZATION AND ROOT BELIEF SYSTEMS

✦ A VISION OF AND PLAN FOR YOUR FUTURE FINANCIAL HEALTH

✦ A DEEPER CONFIDENCE IN YOUR LIFE MATH SKILLS AND FINANCIAL COMPETANCY
